The Doctors of Atlanta Oral & Facial Surgery have been providing specialty surgical care in the Atlanta area since 1980. While our name has varied through the decades, it is our founding surgeons that worked together to create an oral surgery group driven by their prime core values of surgical excellence and patient safety. In 2001, with 7 offices, their plan came together under the name Atlanta Oral & Facial Surgery with a new ambitious goal to provide their core value of services to as many patients as possible. Enabled by a unique patient services business strategy, Atlanta Oral & Facial Surgery is now the largest oral surgery group of its kind in the United States providing an expanded area of diagnosis & surgical expertise at 21 oral surgery offices and one plastic surgery center, with 18 board certified oral surgeons, 1 board certified aesthetics full body plastic surgeon, an Ear Nose & Throat MD., and a Doctor specializing in TMJ diagnosis and treatment.
Patient Services – In order to deliver their approach to surgical services, the founding surgeons believed that two key elements must be adopted to maintain surgical quality and empower their access to more patients.
- Create surgical offices that can focus on our core surgical values by removing every possible element of administrative duties. This led to the creation of the Central Service Center.
- Help our patients get the most out of their insurance coverage by becoming an active provider in as many medical and dental insurance plans as possible. This led to the development of insurance expertise to the unique challenges of oral surgery.
Unique to Atlanta Oral & Facial Surgery offices, there will not be the distractions of the required administrative duties every office must deal with. The AOFS Central Service Center deals with the long list of these duties allowing the surgery staff to focus on patient comfort and safety. The CSC also allows the office staff to maintain a high level of communications with the patient’s referring doctor.
The CSC handles patient services such as claims submission, claim payment accuracy & challenges, statements & refunds, and patient-live features on the AOFS website. At the office level the CSC deals with staff scheduling & training, cash and patient account controls, IT support, paying bills, site & equipment maintenance and daily and monthly accounting. These administrative duties and many others are not optional. AOFS surgical facilities are relieved of these many responsibilities.
Oral Surgery Insurance – Instead of working with a few chosen plans as many oral surgery groups must do, Atlanta Oral & Facial Surgery has chosen to work with as many insurance plans as possible including Medicaid and Medicare. AOFS CSC staff has experience with all the insurance companies including a small list of those we no longer work with because we found them to be a disservice to our patients and AOFS.
Oral Surgery Insurance is not a straightforward issue. Unlike having medical insurance for a medical appointment or dental insurance for a dental appointment, in order for the patient to get the most out of their insurance, oral surgery is frequently a process of working with the coordination of benefits between the two. AOFS front desk staff provides an expertise to help the patient navigate their benefits to the best possible result. The AOFS staff is continually being trained to decipher insurance coverage to get the best coverage, provide an accurate estimate of what the policyholders’ financial responsibility will be, and leave the policyholder with the smallest out of pocket cost as possible.
Surgeon Network – Your Atlanta Oral & Facial Surgery oral surgeons have the distinct advantage of having a large group of easily accessible associates to collaborate and share solutions with. The AOFS surgeons have regular meetings to assure they share information and make AOFS wide decisions consistent with their core values. In addition to this AOFS has an external network nearing 2500 referring doctors. These networks are strengthened by their memberships in a wide range of professional associations and educational contacts.
Patient Standards of Care – Atlanta Oral & Facial Surgery has taken its leading role in promoting elements of patient standards of care. With its large referral doctor network, AOFS has a responsibility to access new and always changing techniques and technologies. In recent years AOFS has deliberated and advocated the patient advantages of dental implants and appropriate industry application of 3-d digital x-ray.
The current widespread acceptance of dental implants was proceeded by years of oral surgeon advocacy as the best alternative for patients that have lost teeth. Due to our size AOFS surgeons have experience with a wide variety of implant companies such as Biomet 3i, Nobel, Dentsply, Straumann, etc., thus, allowing our referring doctors the opportunity to utilize restorative systems they are already familiar and comfortable with. Atlanta Oral & Facial Surgery currently assists referring doctors by placing thousands of implants each year.
To assist in the planning of all of our patients’ procedures, we utilize new technologies such as digital x-ray machines and cone beam (CT) scans to create 3-dimensional models to more precisely plan treatment and help predict the post-surgical outcome. In addition, in 2012 we implemented the changeover to electronic medical records, which allows a patient’s information to be accessible by more than one of our surgeons.
Atlanta Oral & Facial Surgery works diligently to ensure that a patient’s experience in the office is an individual one, and that the care and concern for that patient is at the highest level of excellence. That has been our goal since conception in 1980 and will be the guiding force as AOFS expands in the future.
